As I Lay Me Down To Sleep. . .

In my dreams
I slip out of my skin
easy, like a cool breeze
sweeps across an arid land,
kicking up dust. I spiral upward
my vessel empty, matter discarded,
as my soul runs, fervant and illuminated,
for the truth swallowed whole leaves a coating,
a residue of goodness that glows in the dark.
I hear the roar as I slip back into my self,
feeling weight turn heavy in my trunk,
ears buzzing, earth bound again.
I find myself clothed in flesh,
wrapped in a mortal cloak
incarnations holy gift.
Spirit and matter
joined again
as one.

Written for The Sunday Whirl
using all of the wordle words.

Isn't it amazing where the words take us!
That is what I enjoy about the wordles,
you never know where you will end up. :-)

An excellent unfolding... I'm so impressed by the shape on the page, and how the words flow so naturally. I imagine this came without much work...it seems like one of those pieces that flows forth effortlessly...like it was meant to be just what it is.

Beautiful.

Beautiful, Susannah! This reads almost like a meditation. If I didn't know it was a 'wordle' poem, I would not have guessed.

"residue of goodness that glows in the dark" - lovely image

Beautiful and dreamy... the truth does set us free. I especially like:

I spiral upward
my vessel empty, matter discarded,
as my soul runs, fervant and illuminated,
for the truth swallowed whole leaves a coating,
a residue of goodness that glows in the dark.

So elegant, like flying through a dream yourself. It was written so beautifully and I think that sensation of leaving your binding skin behind is something everyone can relate to! Excellent :)

When I first saw that shape, I thought of an arrow point. It was only after reading your poem I realized it was the point of a poet's quill.

Susannah, I love how you fit the word "skins" in this piece perfectly. I do love where the words take us.

I liked it so much and you are right, you never know. That is what is fun about writing, or any other creative endeavor.

Thanks everyone. :-)

The shape just sort of appeared and I went with it! As always I enjoyed seeing where the wordle words would lead.

Good to see you all. x

Beautiful poem, Susannah. With the day I'm having at work, I'd love to experience the soul escape you describe - but I'd probably get fussed at for falling asleep at my desk. ;)

Oh, no wonder you said where the wordles take us, rather than where we take the words. What a wonderful spiritual affirmation you have created. Smooth and flowing, Susannah,

Elizabeth

Thanks Elizabeth. :-)

Yes, I like to let the wordle take me somewhere that perhaps I normally wouldn't go, that is what I love so much about them.

Good to see you. x

Susannah, a most enjoyable read, thank you. The language flowed so well, I didn't notice the wordle words at all. And the form, just lovely. I liked the rising and then the return.
