Are we ever really safe?
or is that just a delusion
a word to bring us comfort
to instill a sense of being held.
Life is not safe.
Nothing is.
All growth requires risk,
chances taken or refused.
Every moment is sparkling...
tossed up into a sea of atoms.
While we pretend that safety
and Santa Clause, exist
for all good boys and girls.
There is no such a thing.
It shackles us, stifles us,
eliminates the knife edge
the pump of adrenalin.
Stops our full expression
curdles our life force.
There is treasure
behind the illusion.
What's the combination
that will crack
your
safe?

Thought provoking and brilliantly written as always.
The bubbling atoms of possibility would tempt me to crack open my 'safe'...a great, sweeping piece..Jae
ooh that was a completley diferent take on safe than mine - thank you :)
Susannah, I like the line "there is
treasure behind the illusion"
So much truth in this poem.
Pamela
Some very interesting thoughts here. A splendid last stanza!
How very true, Susannah. Life seems to throw things our way no matter how safe we think we are.
"Embrace the horror!"
(Steve Buscemi - Armageddon.)
Yes, yes! I liked it very much!
Confucius is supposed to have said: 'He who does not make a mistake usually does not make anything.' It's the same with safety, you must risk it sometimes in order to gain achievement.
nice one Susannah... the last stanza was cute! :)
It's so very appropriate to make this play on words: safe, as in the feeling AND safe, as in the box we put our valuables in.
Nice turn-around on "safe".

Fantastic writing. The last lines wake up the consciousness!!!!
This piece is packed with wisdom ant truth, Susaannah. My favorite line, however, is: "All growth requires risk, chances taken or refused."
Wise comments on safety vs. growth. I liked your play on the word 'safe' as well.

Susannah, a poem filled with truths. I agree that life is not safe, nothing is. So much pretending we all do.
You have no disagreement from me. Safe is such a relative term. Well done indeed.
Thanks everyone for taking the time to read. I enjoy and appreciate your comments.
Good to see you all, thanks very much for visiting.
Susannah :-)
Truths well written and challenging. Thanks.
Wise words in a fine poem.
Very well thought out. Also love the name of your blog!
Ooo, I love that last line, "What's the combination that will crack your safe?" A rich feast for contemplation. Really great work, Susannah!
Well, I definitely have to agree with you. Safety is an illusion although sometimes a very nice one ;-)
